KAITLYN BROOKS

"Being a part of BEI has made me smile and laugh a lot more -- the seniors make me laugh without even trying. I wanted to make a difference in the Alzheimer's community by working with these exceptionally talented and funny seniors. They are incredibly bright and witty, and the amount of effort I see them put into the [brain exercise] packets is inspiring.

I have been a firsthand witness to the cognitive decline of a family member with Alzheimer's over the years, and I wish that I was able to do something like this with my grandma because I have learned so much not only about the science behind what [BEI does], but the activities themselves."

JILLIAN HOLBROOK

"The Brain Exercise Initiative fosters lasting connections between student volunteers and Seattle seniors. Volunteering is an opportunity to listen to the wisdom and stories of local residents; however, it also allows me to support their cognitive health and memory care journeys.

Similar to other volunteers, I have witnessed the impact of neurodegenerative decline within my own family. My experience in the program has further cemented my desire to assist in improving preventative memory care through tools like brain exercise.

I am excited to see how partnering with additional resident homes can help our program reach more seniors and expand access to resources that assist with cognitive flexibility."
